Poland ignores EU deadline for replying to criticism

Published June 15, 2016

A spokesman for Poland's government says it will not meet the European Union's deadline of Wednesday to respond to concerns about the country's political crisis.

The European Commission has written to Poland criticizing the government's actions concerning the Constitutional Tribunal and set Wednesday as the deadline for response. The letter was considered a warning that sanctions could follow.

But government spokesman Rafal Bochenek said Wednesday a reply should not be expected immediately.

Bochenek told The Associated Press that a reply will be offered at a time when it is possible to show progress in the ongoing efforts by lawmakers to solve the internal conflict surrounding the tribunal.

He would not set any date, but stressed that Poland wants to maintain dialogue and mutual trust with the Commission.
