Poland blames international panel for draft document leak

Published March 02, 2016

Associated Press

Poland's foreign minister says that after a draft document by an international commission was leaked, the government may not fully embrace the conclusions of the final document.

Witold Waszczykowski was referring to a draft opinion by the Venice Commission concerning recent changes in the way judicial appointments are made to Poland's Constitutional Tribunal, one of its highest courts. He requested the opinion after the new conservative government was criticized for making the changes in an unconstitutional manner. The opinion is expected in mid-March, but the draft, which is critical of the changes, was leaked.

Waszczykowski on Wednesday blamed the commission for the leak, saying it will have a negative effect on Poland's view of the opinion.

The commission is an advisory body of the human rights watchdog Council of Europe.
