Philippine anti-graft court orders arrest of 2nd senator on charges of large-scale corruption

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

A Philippine anti-graft court has ordered the arrest of a second senator, one of three members of the powerful Senate to be indicted on a charge of receiving huge kickbacks from government development and anti-poverty funds.

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, son of a deposed president, has denied any wrongdoing but said Monday that he would surrender to the police accompanied by his parents and family. He has been charged before the Sandiganbayan special anti-graft court of pocketing 183 million pesos ($4.2 million) in kickbacks, called plunder, and has also been accused of violating the anti-graft law.

Estrada is the second high-profile politician to face arrest and detention in recent days. Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr. surrendered last week and is now detained on the same plunder case.
