Passenger crashed light aircraft in Spain attempting landing after pilot lost consciousness

Published August 24, 2015

Associated Press

Spain's airport authority says Seville airport was closed for just over two hours after the pilot of a micro-light aircraft lost consciousness and a passenger crashed the plane during an attempted emergency landing.

AENA and the Spanish emergency services 112 said the pilot died, but it was unclear if that happened before or after the crash. The passenger was seriously injured in the crash, three kilometers short of the beginning of the runway.

Emergency services said Saturday they scrambled a helicopter and a plane to try and guide the micro-light down after hearing the pilot had apparently lost consciousness while at the controls.

The airport reopened later Sunday and at least two flights bound for Seville were diverted, AENA said.
