Oman court delays trial for newspaper editors

An Omani court has ordered a two-week postponement in the slander trial of two newspaper editors over articles alleging widespread corruption inside the Justice Ministry.

The charges could lead to the closure of the Azzaman daily and have brought complaints from press watchdog groups about media clampdowns in the tightly ruled Arabian peninsula nation, which faced pro-reform protests earlier this year.

Azzaman editor Ibrahim al-Maamary and managing editor Yussuf al-Haj are accused of insulting the Justice Minister. The stories last year cited claims of embezzlement, graft and other abuses within the ministry.

Judicial officials said Sunday the trial is rescheduled for Aug. 28 to give defense attorneys more time to prepare.
