Official: 600 Congolese soldiers flee into Uganda

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A Ugandan army official says about 600 Congolese soldiers have sought refuge in Uganda after intense battles with rebels.

Ugandan army spokesman Capt. Peter Mugisa said the soldiers had been disarmed and were in the custody of the Ugandan military, which has deployed heavily along the Uganda-Congo border in the days since fighting between the Congolese army and M23 rebels intensified in Congo's lawless east.

Mugisa said the soldiers did not want to go back home yet, fearing they might be massacred by the rebels they were sent to fight.

A U.N. report says the rebels are led by renegade Gen. Bosco Ntaganda, who is wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes.
