North Korea claims no casualties in 2010 shelling

North Korea claims it suffered no military casualties in a deadly artillery exchange it had with South Korea in 2010. It appears to be the North's first official mention on whether it suffered casualties in the exchange.

The North's shelling killed two marines and two civilians on South Korea's front-line Yeonpyeong island. Estimated North Korean casualties have varied in South Korean media reports.

Pyongyang's official media said Saturday no North Korean soldiers were hurt during the fighting. The claim was included in a report about leader Kim Jong Un's visit to a base involved in the shelling.

Both Koreas blame each other for the attack. North Korea has since threatened to attack South Korea and accuses Seoul of denigrating its leadership. Seoul condemned a North Korean rocket launch in April.
