NGOs oppose burying unidentified bodies in Mexico

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A coalition of activist groups says it oppose burying 49 unidentified bodies found in northern Mexico in paupers' graves.

The groups say that foreign experts and foreign relatives of disappeared people should be given a chance to identify the victims, on the chance that they may not be Mexicans.

The coalition includes migrant and human rights groups from Mexico and Central America. It published an open letter to the governor of northern Nuevo Leon state on Monday.

The bodies were found in May on a highway in Nuevo Leon without heads, hands or feet. The massacre was blamed on the Zetas drug gang. Bodies can stay in the local morgue for a maximum of four months, after which they are usually buried in common graves.
