New violence in Myanmar kills up to a dozen people

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Officials say up to 12 people have died in new communal clashes in western Myanmar.

Lawmakers say the violence broke out Tuesday in Yathetaung township between ethnic Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims, who are denied citizenship in Myanmar and are viewed as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

Earlier violence between the two groups left at least 50 people dead and displaced tens of thousands of others.

The area was reported calm Wednesday.

There were varying estimates of the toll from Tuesday's bloodshed.

The head of a Rakhine political party, Aye Maung, says 10 Buddhists and two Muslims were killed.

Ruling party lawmaker Shwe Maung says two of the dead were Muslims. He says he received unconfirmed reports that seven Buddhists also died.
