New UK newspaper to launch despite declining readership

Published February 22, 2016

A British publisher says it is launching the country's first new national paper in 30 years — despite rapidly declining newspaper sales and readers switching to online websites.

Trinity Mirror says The New Day will stand out from other British newspapers because it will be politically neutral and will not have an op-ed column.

Alison Phillips, who will edit the paper, said Monday "we will just tell the story straight" because readers do not want to be told what they should think.

The paper will hit newsstands next week. It will have a presence on social media, but will not have a website.

Earlier this month, the Independent newspaper published its final print edition and announced it was changing to a digital-only format.
