'New IRA' blamed as 2 men killed in separate Northern Ireland shootings

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

Politicians and police are blaming a resurgent Irish Republican Army faction for killing two men in separate gun attacks in Northern Ireland, the first such slayings in the British territory in nearly a year.

A splinter group calling itself the IRA has claimed responsibility for killing an Irish Catholic man in his 40s walking his dogs Tuesday in a Belfast park. Police found his body Wednesday and said he had been shot.

On Thursday a second man was fatally shot in his apartment in the center of Londonderry, Northern Ireland's second-largest city. No group claimed responsibility, but city officials said IRA militants again were most likely to blame.

Several IRA factions that oppose their anti-British movement's 1997 cease-fire last year united. Irish media have christened it the "new IRA."
