New Greek prime minister to undergo eye surgery

Greek authorities say the country's new prime minister, Antonis Samaras, will undergo eye surgery this weekend for a detached retina discovered during a routine examination.

The prime minister's office said Friday that the test revealed Samaras has the early stages of retinal detachment and that surgery is the best option. Samaras will be operated on Saturday morning in Athens' Attiko Hospital.

Samaras was sworn in as Greece's fourth prime minister in eight months on Wednesday, ending a protracted political crisis that had raised fears of Greece being forced to leave the eurozone. Such a scenario would have global repercussions.

He heads a three-party coalition government formed after his conservative party came first in June 17 elections, but without enough votes to form a government on its own.
