Published January 08, 2015

The Netherlands has informed the U.N. Security Council of the international investigation it is leading into the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in eastern Ukraine.

Dutch Ambassador Karel van Oosterom said in a letter to the council obtained Monday by The Associated Press that the current focus of international efforts is on the recovery of victims' remains.

The effort is coordinated by the Netherlands with the participation of Australia and Malaysia.

There were 193 Dutch, 43 Malaysians and 37 Australians on Flight 17 when it was shot down over rebel-held territory on July 17 en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, killing all 298 people on board. U.S. and Ukrainian officials say it was shot down by a missile from rebel territory, most likely by mistake.
