Multi-vehicle crash kills 11 in Egypt's Minya province

Published February 02, 2018

Associated Press

Egypt's Health Ministry says a crash involving several cars has killed at least 11 people and wounded 32 others in Minya province, south of Cairo.

The ministry said the collision took place early Friday on the outskirts of Minya, on the road connecting the province to Cairo.

State-run newspaper Al-Ahram said there were two incidents in the same area, the first involving a crash of three cars and another in which a car overturned.

Road accidents are common in Egypt due to badly maintained roads and poor enforcement of traffic laws.

The World Health Organization says road accidents kill around 12,000 people in Egypt annually.

Egypt generally has a poor transportation safety record. The country's official statistics agency says 14,700 road accidents took place in 2016.
