Morocco's jobless declare national day of unemployment and march in protest

Some 2,000 jobless Moroccans have marched through the capital demanding the government sort out the nation's unemployment.

Like the rest of North Africa, youth unemployment, especially among university graduates, is a persistent social woe that successive governments have been unable to tackle. Official statistics show that some 30 percent of those under 34 are unemployed.

Participants in the march demanded that the government respect their right to work by giving them public sector jobs.

Many of the protesters also denounced the government practice of insisting on exams to determine the skill level of job applicants.

The Islamist-led government has been under increasing pressure over a faltering economy and efforts to cut expensive fuel subsidies.
