Morocco resumes contact with European authorities

Morocco's government has announced its intention to resume contacts with the European Union amid disputes between the country and the international community over Western Sahara.

The country had suspended contacts with Brussels last month after a European court ruling annulling a fisheries and agriculture agreement between Morocco and the EU because it included Western Saharan territory.

The government made the decision Thursday following the visit of the EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, which "reassured Morocco" and provided "guarantees that a solution would be met to the crisis resulting from the ... ruling," according to a statement released on state news agency MAP.

The Moroccan government has taken issue with U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon, who recently referred to the country's "occupation" of the disputed area of North Africa.
