Montserrat decries colony status on UN list

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

The tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat no longer wants the United Nations to list it as a colony.

Premier Reuben Meade says the island of 5,000 people is an overseas British territory by choice and its inhabitants do not consider themselves to be a colony.

He notes in a statement issued Thursday that a 2010 constitutional amendment gives local government ministers the right to make all executive decisions.

Montserrat is one of seven Caribbean islands that the United Nations considers colonies.
