Militants: Ex-president is sponsor of Nigeria oil attacks

Published August 08, 2016

Associated Press

A splinter group of Nigerian oil militants is accusing former President Goodluck Jonathan and other politicians in the oil-rich Niger Delta of sponsoring attacks on oil installations that have slashed the West African nation's petroleum production and government revenue.

Jonathan denied the allegations Monday and said the militants want to assassinate him.

On Sunday, a spokesman for the Reformed Niger Delta Avengers published 20 names of alleged sponsors of the Niger Delta Avengers, the group it broke away from.

Politicians long have been accused of being behind the attacks to destabilize Muhammadu Buhari's government.
