Mexico sees attempt to loosen security on "El Chapo"

The Mexican government is warning of a strategy by drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman to try to loosen the security measures at the maximum-security prison where he has already escaped once.

National security commissioner Renato Sales told reporters Monday that recent statements made by an alleged daughter of Guzman to The Guardian newspaper that the government had betrayed him suggest a media strategy.

Sales said the allegations lacked proof and were only meant to delegitimize state institutions. He did not take questions.

Guzman was recaptured in January in the western state of Sinaloa after fleeing a safe house through a storm sewer. He had escaped from prison in July through a mile-long tunnel.

Since returning to prison Guzman has complained that guards do not let him sleep.
