Mexican police find 14 bodies in Gulf coast state

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Prosecutors in Mexico's Gulf coast state of Veracruz say authorities have found 14 bodies in a truck abandoned on a highway.

The area has been the scene of frequent bloody turf battles between the Zetas gang and the rival Gulf cartel, which is allied with the Sinaloa cartel.

The Veracruz state government said Tuesday that police found the light cargo truck late Monday in an area near the border with state of Tamaulipas.

It was not immediately clear if there was any evidence of drug cartel involvement in the crime.

On Thursday, 14 other bodies were abandoned inside a bus near the city hall in Ciudad Mante, across the border in Tamauilpas.

A message was found there in which a gang took responsibility for the killings.
