Mayor Kidnapped Near Mexico City, Guard Killed

Published December 02, 2015

Associated Press

TOLUCA, Mexico-- Mexican authorities say unknown assailants kidnapped the mayor of a town near Mexico City and police are investigating the killing of one of his bodyguards found dead at the scene.

A Mexico state Attorney General's Office spokesman says Zacualpan Mayor Jose Nava Altamirano was abducted Friday on an unpopulated stretch of highway.

Spokesman Alfredo Albiter said Saturday two witnesses are giving statements about the kidnapping.

The rural town of Zacualpan south of Mexico City neighbors the resort city of Ixtapan de la Sal, whose mayor was gunned down in 2008.

At least three drug gangs are battling for control of Mexico state drug turf.
