Malian police arrest 19 after attack on EU military offices

Published March 22, 2016

Associated Press

A police official in Mali says 19 people have been arrested following an attack on the European Union military mission headquarters in the capital.

Moussa Ag Infahi, director-general of Mali's police force, said Tuesday that two of the detainees are considered strong suspects.

Authorities are also conducting a ballistics investigation and studying mobile phone records based on items left behind at the scene after Monday's attack.

The EU military mission has said that none of its personnel was hurt in the violence, although the attack elevated fears that Islamic extremists are capable of hitting anytime and anywhere in West Africa.

Monday's attack comes about four months after jihadis attacked the Radisson Blu hotel in Bamako, killing 20 people.
