Maldives appeals for support for fresh presidential election, vows transparency

Published January 13, 2015

The Maldives government has called on all politicians to accept a Supreme Court ruling throwing out the result of last month's presidential election and vowed that the next vote will be transparent.

On Monday, the court annulled the results of the first round of voting in the country's presidential election, agreeing with a losing candidate that the vote was flawed.

In a statement posted on the Foreign Ministry web site, the government promised to ensure "a smooth transfer of power."

It said the government is seeking the "support of friendly governments" and international organizations to assist it in holding a fresh vote.

Four judges of a seven-member panel decided that 5,600 votes cast in the Sept. 7 vote were tainted. It ordered a revote to be completed by Nov. 3.
