Lithuania's FM warns Europe losing info war with Russia

Published March 18, 2016

Associated Press

Lithuania's foreign minister says Europe is engaged in an information war with Russia, and losing.

Linas Linkevicius says European governments underestimate Moscow's efforts to spread disinformation through Kremlin-backed media.

Linkevicius told a political conference in Berlin on Friday that the media has become as much of a battlefield for Russia as the cyber realm and energy policy.

The European Union established a strategic communications task force last year to monitor and respond to disinformation in eastern Europe.

Jakub Kalensky, a representative for the EU task force, cited a sharp rise in negative reports about migrants as an example of the way Moscow seeks to promote its political ends through Kremlin-friendly TV stations and websites.

Kalensky said Germany and Chancellor Angela Merkel were currently "target No. 1 for pro-Kremlin media."
