Lightning Reportedly Kills 7 at South Africa Kindergarten

A two-year-old child was among seven people killed when lightning struck a large tent erected for a Christmas party at a kindergarten in South Africa, national news agency Sapa reported Saturday.

A further 67 people, including parents and toddlers, were injured during the the storm Friday afternoon in the KwaZulu Natal province.

"The clouds emerged and ultimately a huge storm started. The lightning struck the marquee killing five people instantly and two died in hospital," provincial disaster management head, Mthokozisi Duza told Sapa.

The injured were taken to Itshelejuba Hospital and the Ngoma Hospital. Duza said the bodies of those who died had yet to be identified. A coroner has begun an investigation into the incident.
