Lebanon indicts dozens from 2007 clashes

Lebanese judicial officials say an investigative judge has indicted 88 people allegedly involved in 2007 fighting against the army in a Palestinian refugee camp in northern Lebanon, demanding that some of them face the death penalty.

The officials, who spoke anonymously in line with regulations, say judge Ghassan Oeidat also ordered the release of 126 others.

The officials say some of those indicted on Thursday are still at large. They include Lebanese and foreigners.

Charges included killing soldiers and civilians as well as harming Lebanon's security and stability.

The allegations stem from a three-month battle in Nahr el-Bared camp pitting the army against the al-Qaida-inspired group Fatah Islam. More than 170 soldiers died, as well as dozens of militants and Palestinian civilians.

About 400,000 Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon.
