Lawyers for accused in 9/11 case press effort to pause Guantanamo proceedings over tech issues

Lawyers for the accused in the Sept. 11 case at Guantanamo are pressing their effort to put proceedings on hold until security problems with a computer network are fixed.

The chief defense counsel for military commissions spent the day testifying about her April order forbidding use of a Pentagon computer network because of apparent security flaws. Air Force Col. Karen Mayberry told the court Wednesday that she lost confidence in the system after large amounts of data were lost and emails from defense lawyers disappeared or were improperly sent to prosecutors. Creating a new system would take at least three months and likely cost millions. Mayberry was to resume testifying Thursday.

Five Guantanamo prisoners face charges that include terrorism and murder for their alleged roles in the Sept. 11 attacks.
