Lawyer says 3 of 5 detained Chinese women's rights activists to be freed, fates of 2 unclear

A lawyer says three of five Chinese women's rights activists detained in Beijing are being freed.

Liang Xiaojun said family members of the three were informed that they would be freed sometime Monday under a form of conditional release that still allows charges to be brought later.

Lawyers for the women, Wang Man, Zheng Churan and Wei Tingting, did not answer phone calls, and contacts for their family members were not immediately available.

Liang said no such notice had been received for his client, Wu Rongrong, or for the fifth woman, Li Tingting.

The five were detained last month as they prepared to distribute materials against domestic violence.

Their case has brought international expressions of concern, including from U.S. presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
