Lawyer: Guantanamo prisoner back home in Sudan

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

A lawyer says a man who spent 10 years as a prisoner at the U.S. detention facility in Guantanamo Bay is back home in Sudan and getting re-acquainted with his family.

Paul Reichler, a lawyer for Ibrahim al-Qosi, says the former prisoner doesn't face any additional confinement.

Reichler says al-Qosi will spend some time in a government-sponsored rehabilitation and reintegration program in Khartoum before he returns to his hometown.

Al-Qosi recently turned 52, and Reichler said Wednesday's release was "probably the best birthday present he ever received."

Al-Qosi prepared food and handled logistics at a militant camp in Afghanistan. He pleaded guilty in a military court to aiding terrorism and conspiracy under a plea deal in 2010.

There are now 168 prisoners at the U.S. base in Cuba.
