Kuwaiti appeals court upholds death sentence against 1 defendant in Shiite mosque attack

A Kuwaiti appeals court has upheld a death sentence against a man convicted in connection with an Islamic State-claimed suicide bombing at a prominent Shiite mosque in the capital in June.

Seven people were sentenced to death in September over the bombing, which was carried out by Saudi national Fahad Suleiman Abdulmohsen al-Gabbaa.

The official Kuwait News Agency said Sunday that Judge Hani al-Hamdan upheld the sentence against the prime suspect, Abdulrahman Sabah Eidan Saud. Authorities accuse him of driving al-Gabbaa to the scene of the attack.

The court revoked the death sentence against another suspect, Fahad Muhareb, and sentenced him to 15 years in prison instead. The appeals of five other defendants are ongoing.

Lawyers for the defendants could not be reached for comment.
