Kuwait court begins hearing appeal of 15 convicted for IS-claimed mosque bombing

Kuwait's Court of Appeals has begun to hear the appeal of a verdict against 15 people convicted in connection with an Islamic State-claimed suicide bombing at a Shiite mosque in June.

The official Kuwait News Agency said Sunday's opening hearing included testimony from one of the defendants and has been adjourned until Thursday, when it will resume with a closed-door session.

A lower court sentenced seven people to death and another eight to prison terms ranging from two to 15 years in the case last month.

The June 26 bombing during Friday prayers inside one of Kuwait's oldest Shiite mosques killed 27 and was carried out by a Saudi citizen identified as Fahad Suleiman Abdulmohsen al-Gabbaa. It was the first major terrorist attack in Kuwait in more than two decades.
