Kosovo parliament approves EU rule of law mission extension

Published June 17, 2016

Associated Press

Kosovo's parliament has approved extending for two years the European Union's rule-of-law mission, known as EULEX.

The 120-seat Parliament on Friday voted with 84 votes in favor and six against two draft laws prepared by the government following a formal exchange of letters between Kosovo's President Hashim Thaci and EU's foreign policy chief, Federica Mogherini.

The government's efforts to negotiate a different agreement with Brussels delayed the formal approval of the EULEX mandate that ended June 14.

The EULEX mission supporting Kosovo on its path to greater European integration in the areas of rule of law and the fight against corruption started in 2008, when Pristina declared independence from Serbia.
