Kenya Airways prepares for new Boeing Dreamliners, new terminal and, soon, direct US flights

Published January 08, 2015

The chief executive of Kenya Airways predicts an exciting upcoming decade for air travel in Africa.

Titus Naikuni said Kenya Airways will begin taking delivery of six new Boeing 787 Dreamliners in April. Soon after that, Naikuni's airline will open a new terminal at Nairobi's main international airport.

Naikuni told a public forum on Saturday that a massive fire that engulfed Nairobi's arrivals hall in August has been turned into an opportunity. A new arrivals terminal is being built that will upgrade the airport's security and allow direct flights to the United States, perhaps beginning in 2016.

The African Airlines Association says international air traffic to and from Africa has been growing about 6 percent a year over the last decade, with domestic traffic up 12 percent per year.
