Judge: Alleged UK terror gang face trial in 2012

A British judge says nine men accused of plotting terrorist attacks on London landmarks including the Houses of Parliament and the U.S. embassy will stand trial next year.

Justice David Calvert-Smith told a hearing on Friday that the group — rounded up in raids on London, the central England city of Stoke-on-Trent and Welsh capital Cardiff — will likely face a full court hearing in Jan. 2012.

The men are charged with conspiring to cause explosions, and preparing acts of terrorism between Nov.6 and Dec. 21.

Prosecutors alleged they had agreed on potential targets, carried out reconnaissance and tested bomb materials.

The arrests of the men followed Britain's largest anti-terror raids in two years and months of jitters over possible terror plots in Europe.
