Japan Tsunami Warning Canceled After 7.0-Magnitude Quake

Japan lifted a tsunami advisory Sunday after only small waves arrived at the nation's northern Pacific coast a few hours after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake hit the region.

The quake was centered about 131 miles (212km) east of Sendai, the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture, according to the US Geological Survey. It hit the area at 9:57am local time.

The Japan Meteorological Agency lifted the tsunami advisory for Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima prefectures at 11:45am after only small waves arrived on the coast, and no damage was reported.

However, the agency advised that residents should still be wary on the water, with slight sea-level changes possible.

The port town of Soma, in Miyagi, experienced a four-inch (10cm) tsunami at 11:11 am, the Japanese agency said.

The port of Ofunato, Iwate prefecture, which saw a moderate tidal change earlier, experienced a similar wave height, AFP reported.

The area is still rebuilding after being ravaged by a devastating earthquake and tsunami on March 11.
