Jamaica officer accused of beheading man

Published November 20, 2014

A Jamaican police officer has been charged with beheading a man who authorities say may have been a witness in a corruption probe against him.

The island's public prosecutor charged Constable Jeffrey Peart on Wednesday, nearly a month after a headless body was discovered in the northern parish of St. Ann.

Authorities say the beheading victim is believed to be a witness in a corruption case against the rookie 24-year-old officer, who was based in the tourist town of Negril.

Investigators have recently questioned members of the suspended officer's family.

St. Ann Police Superintendent Dudley Scott says Peart's first court hearing is expected on Friday. He has not yet entered a plea.
