Ivory Coast grenade attacks kills 1, wounds 18

Published November 17, 2014

Associated Press

The United Nations says a grenade attack has killed one person and wounded 18 in a district of Ivory Coast's restive commercial capital.

The U.N. said in a Wednesday statement that three women and a baby were among the wounded in Tuesday night's attack in Abidjan. It was not clear who was responsible for the attack. Violence has grown in recent weeks over a political crisis sparked when both presidential candidates claimed victory in a November poll.

Clashes in Abidjan and the country's west have left hundreds dead in recent months. Troops loyal to incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo and fighters loyal to internationally recognized president Alassane Ouattara have moved in on civilian areas.

Ouattara on Tuesday made Gbagbo one final offer to form a national unity government.
