Italy's corruption probes claim Lombardy legislature as governor calls for early elections

The embattled governor of Italy's powerful Lombardy region, which includes Milan, has announced the dissolution of the regional legislature as Italy's mounting political corruption scandal claims its biggest victim yet.

Roberto Formigoni has been facing calls for his own resignation after one of his commissioners was arrested last week on accusations he bought votes from the 'ndrangheta mob in 2010.

Lawmakers draped a "Resign Formigoni" banner on the dais Tuesday before Formigoni, a member of ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi's party, announced the end of the legislature. He has said he would name a technical administration to run Lombardy until early elections.

An explosion of corruption investigations targeting politicians of nearly every political stripe, accusing them of using public funds for personal use, has discredited Italy's political class ahead of spring general elections.
