Israeli Education minister Naftali Bennett ousts dovish military veterans' group from schools

Published December 15, 2015

Associated Press

Israel's education minister has forbidden a group of veterans critical of the army from conducting activities in Israeli schools.

Naftali Bennett says he made the move against Breaking the Silence Tuesday because, "those who harm IDF soldiers do not have a place in the education system."

Since its founding in 2004, the group of former Israeli soldiers has collected testimony from more than 1,000 veterans who described improper or illegal behavior against Palestinians.

On Sunday, Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon announced a similar ban on the group conducting activities with the military. He described Breaking the Silence as "part of the attempts to delegitimize us."

Breaking the Silence spokesman Avihai Stollar says his organization exposes "the daily moral price of a prolonged military occupation."
