Israeli drill simulates combat on fronts with Syria, Lebanon

Published January 20, 2016

Associated Press

Israel's military has conducted a drill to prepare for simultaneous combat along its northern frontier with Syria and Lebanon.

It said Wednesday the two-week exercise that combined air, ground and naval forces was aimed at "preparing troops for a long-term multi-front conflict."

Northern Command chief Aviv Kochavi said it showed how the military is able to "implement operational plans in all arenas."

Israel fought a monthlong war against Lebanon's Hezbollah militants in 2006. Israel said Wednesday it thwarted a plot by Hezbollah to recruit Palestinians to attack Israelis.

On the Syrian frontier, Israel has been warily watching as insurgents battle forces loyal to President Bashar Assad. Israel and Syria are bitter enemies but Assad kept the border quiet for decades.
