Israel: Suspected Palestinian gunman lightly wounds soldier

Published January 20, 2016

Associated Press

The Israeli military says a suspected Palestinian gunman has shot and lightly wounded an Israeli soldier in the West Bank.

The military says the gunman opened fire at forces during a "routine activity" by the troops near the West Bank city of Tulkarem early on Wednesday. The army says troops fired back as the gunman fled, and a search is underway.

The last four months have seen near-daily Palestinian attacks on Israelis that have killed more than 25 people. Some 146 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, of which some 101 have been identified by Israel as attackers. The rest were killed in clashes with troops.

Israeli officials blame the violence on a Palestinian campaign of incitement. Palestinian officials say it stems from frustration over Israeli occupation.
