Islamist sect, security forces clash in Nigeria

Published November 20, 2014

Associated Press

Police in northeastern Nigeria say security forces and gunmen have clashed anew in a city wracked by violence.

Yobe state police chief Patrick Egbuniwe said suspected members of the radical Islamist sect Boko Haram on Monday attacked three police targets in the city of Damaturu.

He said police and army fought back, adding that he was not aware of any casualties.

The Yobe state government had announced the relaxation of a dusk-to-dawn curfew just before the attacks began.

Such clashes have been on the rise since the sect carried out a series of deadly attacks in the city last month.

Boko Haram is held responsible for more than 630 deaths this year alone according to an Associated Press count.
