Irish woman who lost battle to let partner help her commit suicide has died

Published January 13, 2015

Associated Press

The partner of a paralyzed woman who lost a highly-publicized court battle in Ireland to let him help her commit suicide says she has died.

Marie Fleming, 59, had multiple sclerosis, a disease that attacks the central nervous system. In April, Ireland's Supreme Court rejected her appeal to let partner Tom Curran help her commit suicide, ruling that the Irish constitution confers no "right to die."

Curran said Fleming died early Friday morning at home in Arklow.

He said he was with her at the time and that he had not been expecting her death.
