Iraqi officials say last 42 Iranian exiles of camp struck by deadly shooting leave for Baghdad

Iraqi officials say the remaining 42 residents of an Iranian dissident camp that was the scene of a disputed outbreak of violence last week have left the compound to join their comrades at a camp near Baghdad airport.

Camp Ashraf has been used by the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq dissident group since the 1980s, when Saddam Hussein granted its members asylum. Iraq's postwar leaders have wanted the move the MEK out for years.

The camp is located in Iraq's Diyala province, about 95 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of the Iraqi capital. Maj. Gen. Jamil al-Shimmari, the police chief of Diyala province, and the mayor of the nearby town of Khalis, Oday al-Khadran, told The Associated Press that the residents departed Wednesday evening.

Representatives for the MEK couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
