Iran invites UN human rights chief who criticized Tehran's crackdown on opposition

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran has invited the U.N. human right chief who recently criticized Tehran's crackdown on the opposition following the country's disputed presidential election last June.

The government-owned Borna website says Iran's rights official Mohammad Javad Larijani extended the invitation to U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay in a meeting with the Swiss ambassador in Tehran.

The report was posted late Wednesday. It does not provide details about when Pillay's visit might take place.

Pillay expressed concern in March over Iran's deteriorating human rights situation and criticized the crackdown on the opposition.

Iran has handed down a dozen death sentences so far and sentenced more than 80 opposition activists to prison terms.
