Interpol offers help in finding, rescuing more than 270 Nigerian girls kidnapped by extremists

Published January 08, 2015

Associated Press

Interpol is offering to help find and rescue more than 270 Nigerian schoolgirls still kidnapped by a terrorist group.

The international police agency says in a statement Friday it could send a team to Nigeria to help local authorities with investigative and analytical support.

Interpol, based in Lyon, France, also says it could publish notices on each girl that could be circulated to police around the world to help them identify the victims if they are taken to other countries. The extremist group Boko Haram has said it kidnapped the girls and plans to sell them into slavery.

Several countries have offered help to Nigeria since the girls were kidnapped April 15. The government has denied accusations that it has been slow to rescue the girls.
