Indian prime minister arrives in Iran to boost economic ties

Published May 22, 2016

Associated Press

Iran's official IRNA news agency says the Indian prime minister has arrived in Tehran, the first such visit in over a decade.

The Sunday report said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet with President Hassan Rouhani and other Iranian leaders during his two-day visit.

The two countries are planning to develop Chabahar port in southeast Iran, expanding a trade route for the land-locked countries of central Asia that bypasses Pakistan.

India is also looking to import more oil from Iran and develop a gas field there. In 2012 Iran was India's second-largest crude supplier but oil exports subsequently fell.

Tehran has been seeking to reintegrate into the global economic system following a landmark deal with world powers that lifted sanctions in return for limiting its nuclear program.
