India says Chinese troops have crossed disputed Himalayan boundary, raising tensions

An Indian official has accused Chinese soldiers of launching an incursion deep across the border. The incident is raising tensions between the two Asian giants over their disputed boundary in the Himalayas.

Jammu and Kashmir state official Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo said late Monday that Chinese soldiers had crossed 10 kilometers (6 miles) into India. The incursion took place April 15.

A foreign ministry official said a protest was filed with the Chinese ambassador last week about Chinese troops putting up tents in the Depsang valley in the Ladakh region in eastern Kashmir.

A local official said the troops remained inside Indian territory.

China dismissed reports of an incursion as Indian media speculation.

China has repeatedly made incursions in recent years. In 1962, the two sides fought a brief border war.
