In absence of solid leads, Bangkok officials debate if security cameras are working or not

Bangkok city hall has rejected criticism from the national police chief, who said the probe into last week's deadly bombing has been hindered by broken security cameras.

The police chief said Monday that 15 out of 20 security cameras along the main suspect's getaway path were broken, leaving police to guess which way he went.

City hall, known as the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority, called a news conference Tuesday to deny the criticism.

City hall official Vichai Sangprapai said only one faulty camera was detected along the man's suspected path, "and that would not distort the investigation."

More than a week after the Aug. 17 bombing at the capital's revered Erawan Shrine which left 20 people dead, police appeared no closer to tracking down suspects or determining a motive.
