Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt has been temporarily freed from an Indian prison where he is serving time for illegal possession of weapons linked to Mumbai's 1993 terror attack.

Authorities at the Yerawada Central Jail in Pune gave the actor the two-week break for good behavior. He says he will spend it with his family.

Dutt, 54, was convicted for illegal possession of weapons linked to the 1993 attack that killed 257 people. He has said he knew nothing about the terror plot, and wanted the guns to protect his family after receiving threats during religious riots.

In March, the Supreme Court upheld the conviction but cut his sentence to five years from six.

Dutt is known for his roles as a reformed thug who follows the teachings of Mohandas Gandhi.
